Educational and debating program for Karelian creative youth is a project devoted to contemporary trends, strategies and technologies of contemporary art and culture. Its initiator is the Creative Industries and Cultural Tourism Development Fund under the auspices of the Open Society Institute.

The project goal is assistance to creative youth’s self-realization and contemporary art development in Petrozavodsk as an important feature of modern urban life.

The program is aimed at young workers of culture, artists, designers, musicians, photographers and all creative people of Petrozavodsk and the Republic of Karelia.

In February – May 2010 the program participants will take 2 courses – «Language and Technologies of Contemporary Art» and «Approaches and Strategies in Contemporary Art». Classes will be held by the leading Russian experts in contemporary art as lectures, seminars and master’s classes. Two open discussions devoted to modern processes in the field of art and culture, new media theories and the roles of today’s artists will take place in the framework of the project.

A group exhibition of the best art-projects by program participants who are Karelian young creative people is going to be a logical end to the project.

The final project exhibition presents the material created by the project-participants in the course of the educational program. They are various assignments beginning with collages and script camera reports by camera-men and directors and finishing with individual creative works. The program participants are interested in a great number of activities, which are photography, video-art, animated comic strips, animated and fiction films. Actually, the exhibition itself shows that the abilities of the creative community have greatly developed due to digital technologies particularly thanks to unlimited expanse of the media scene. Such professional activities as making films and audio-dicks and design modeling are getting a total field of activity and co-exist in the virtual reality side by side. The exhibited works made not only by novice artists but by creative people working in other fields of activities illustrate another time a changed situation in the cultural environment and its extended field. New reality, which provides both professional artists and amateurs with endless possibilities for self-realization, still has not done away with its eternal questions like «What is art at nowadays?», «Who is considered to be an artist-creator?», «What part does a creative person play in today’s world», and «What is exactly contemporary in contemporary culture and art?»
